About Us

The Canadian Education in Emergencies Working Group (EiEWG) is an informal group of education stakeholders concerned with raising the profile of education as an integral part of the first phase response to emergency and protracted situations. The views, opinions and positions expressed by the authors and those providing comments on these blogs are theirs alone and do not necessarily reflect the views, opinions or positions of the various stakeholders or their respective organizations.

Education in emergencies is important because:

  • Education is a right, even in the face of emergencies;
  • Education is critical for healthy development of children and communities;
  • Education can help provide children with a sense of normalcy;
  • Education can contribute to increased community resilience;
  • Education can help to in promoting tolerance and conflict resolution.

Advocacy, and capacity development, analysis and research will focus on the right to education in emergency situations from preparedness through to recovery, including during conflict, complex emergencies, and disasters related to natural phenomena and the effects of climate change. The group will build on the strengths of the members and will share information, exchange experiences and knowledge, explore opportunities for closer co-ordination and collaboration with one another and to the broader Education Cluster Working Group and promote improvement of policy related to EiE.
